J’ai grandi en écoutant ses chansons. Avec Brel, il reste mon chanteur préféré. Outre La ballade de Melody Nelson, je viens d’enregistrer Requiem pour un con avec Françoise Hardy. J’adore l’artiste et l’homme. Gainsbourg est un sacré personnage. Petit, je l’ai vu chez Drucker dire en direct à Whitney Houston :"I want to fuck you". Il brûlait des billets à la télévision. "On a écrit «My Sweet Prince» d’après un événement réel, à propos d’une de mes relations qui s’est achevée en une véritable tragédie. Un mec dont nous étions tous les trois très proches a failli mourir. C’était très pénible, nous étions assez troublés par ces événements. Parce que nous avions ces sentiments très forts en nous, cette chanson est comme sortie de nulle part. De nos tripes. C’est une chanson à laquelle je suis très attaché. Elle évoque une relation avec un mec et un rapport avec une certaine substance. Ces deux relations ont pris fin simultanément dans des conditions dramatiques. Il avait l’habitude de m’appeler «My Sweet Prince». Des amoureux peuvent se la chanter l’un à l’autre. Quelle ironie, puisqu’elle parle de l’effondrement d’une relation. C’est une des chansons de l’album qui est écrite du point de vue d’un ancien amant qui s’adresse à moi. Quand on a écrit «My Sweet Prince», une pensée étrange m’a traversé l’esprit : cette chanson devenait vraiment noire et déchirante. Elle parle effectivement de sujets douloureux comme la drogue et le suicide. J’imagine que beaucoup de gens dans des pays différents n’ont pas vraiment compris de quoi elle parlait. Mais ça m’est égal qu’on n’en saisisse pas le sens. «My Sweet Prince», ce serait davantage le «Chelsea Hotel» numéro 2 de Leonard Cohen. Mais beaucoup de gens inventent leurs propres histoires à l’écoute des chansons. Ils leur donnent des significations différentes selon leur personnalité. Les gens se projettent sur les chansons et en affectent le propos initial. Chaque individu veut s’en approprier le sens."

Nous avons écrit une chanson, "My Sweet Prince", qui parle d'héroine et de suicide. J'ai rencontré des gens qui m'ont dit : "Je fais l'amour à ma copine en écoutant "My Sweet Prince". Et moi, je leur dis : "Non ! Tu n'as pas saisi le sens !" C'est la pire des chansons pour faire l"amour. C'est fou. Souvent, on me dit qu'on fait l'amour en écoutant Placebo. J'ai envie de répondre : "Mais tu ne sais pas ce qui se passait dans ma vie au moment ou j'ai écris ces chansons". C'est très étrange. Mais la beauté réside aussi dans l'innocence. Les gens vivent leur vie avec ta musique, ils vivent leurs propres histoires à travers elle. Et heureusement, il y a un peu plus d'ambiguïté et de profondeur dans nos chansons que dans celles d'Oasis par exemple (rires) !

1. Pierrot est un personnage de la Commedia Dell'Arte, type de théâtre italien apparu au XVIème siècle. Prénommé initialement Pedrolino, il est resté célèbre en nous laissant l'image d'un clown maquillé de blanc et pleurant, sur un croissant de lune, sa bien-aimée Colombine.
